RESUMO
Este estudo tem por objetivo promover uma reflexão teórica em torno do medo da morte, considerada um mal, e sua relação com o cuidar em enfermagem. O estudo revelou que, apesar da morte fazer parte da vida e de ser vista de diferentes maneiras nas diversas culturas, ainda é um mal temido; que há a necessidade de preparo dos profissionais de saúde para lidar com os próprios sentimentos diante da morte; que a idade avançada, o câncer e a presença do doente na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva ainda suscitam imagem de morte por parte das pessoas. Diante da incapacidade em livrar-se desse mal, observa-se a busca da negociação e a crença (religiosidade) enquanto elemento interveniente para a salvação e a redução da angústia. Conclui-se que o medo da morte é um mal que permeia os sentimentos de profissionais da saúde, em especial os enfermeiros, bem como das pessoas, seja estas saudáveis ou adoecidas
This study aims to promote a theoretical reflection about the fear of death, considered the evils, and his relationship with the care in nursing. The study revealed that despite the death to be part of life and to be seen in different ways in different cultures, yet is the most feared evil; that there is a need for preparation of health professionals to deal with their own feelings ahead of death; that the old age, cancer and the presence of the patient in Intensive Care Units still raise image of death by the people. Faced with the inability to get rid of this evil, there is a quest for negotiation and belief (religious) as part actor for the salvation and the reduction of anxiety. It is concluded that the fear of death is an evil that permeates the feelings of health professionals, especially the nurses, and the people, whether they or patients healthy.
